My Father Blue — Forgive Me, Father, As I Have Sinned

It’s hard to admit fault. Luckily, I rarely have to do it since I’m as close to perfect as one can get. But, I do have my moments, and one of those came with the My Father Blue.

Hype hangover

If you recall, The Judge was the 2024 Cigar Aficionado Cigar of the Year. It was sold out everywhere, and nobody could keep it in stock.

I tried it, and… I thought it was pretty much dog shit. It wasn’t a short filler/horse hair Cuban sandwich fake Cohiba, but it wasn’t even the best cigar I smoked that month, let alone that year.

I’ll get off my soapbox about why that was an undeserving cigar, and that entire list is yearly bullshit tied to ad revenue, but I wasn’t impressed the least bit. I smoked exactly one and never tried it again (which I know is bad practice, as every cigar should get multiple takes at wowing you, but it was so hyped and such a let-down that it left a bad taste in my mouth — literally).

So, when the Blue was making its way around smokers’ circles last year, I wrote it off. “Not doing that again lol,” is what I told myself (and yes, I do use texting shorthand in my own mental conversations).

In the fall, I was perusing my local B&M’s stock and saw the Blue, said fuck it, and grabbed one to stow away. I let it age a couple/few months, and finally got around to smoking it a couple of weeks back. And I’m pissed I waited so long.

Anything you can do, I can do better

From the get-go, I’ve promised not to do lengthy reviews. I pride myself on not being a hoity-toity, ‘look at me and my fancy tasting notes’ cigar reviewer. I’m probably too in your face about how much I DON’T do those kinds of reviews. So, here’s my review:

I was wrong. This was a great smoke.

I wanted to hate it, I truly did. That’s why I put it off forever.

My vitola of choice was the toro gardo 6 x 60, and let me tell you, it hit. The construction, from easy lighting to a perfect draw to a continuous puff — even after putting it down for periods of time — this was a great smoke start to finish.

It was smooth, it was creamy, it was one that I will visit again. In fact, I’m buying a box later this month (and I never buy boxes).

TL;DR I judged the My Father Blue because I didn’t like another one in the line, and I ate crow about it.
